Is God Writing Yours?

Somebody once said that God is in the business of writing final chapters in our lives. In speaking of final chapters, we are not relating in a general manner about the end of time. Rather, we are thinking of the final chapter in the subjective sense of our individual life story, testimony or spiritual pilgrimage.

In other words, regarding our lives and times, we need not and should not think or feel that because circumstances do not work out the way we think they should at any given moment, that that is the end of the story.

In 1 Timothy 2, verse 12, the Apostle Paul writes of the way and manner in which he lived prior to his realization of God’s mercy. He scoffed at the name of Christ. He savagely hunted down God’s people, “harming them in every way I could” (v.13-NLT). And this is not even near the final chapter in the book of Paul’s life.

At the moment of Paul’s deepest darkness, the light came on with a blinding brightness that knocked Paul to his senses and gave life to his deadened heart. New light! New life! New liberty! God delights to give second chances. And third and fourth and more, He delights to write those ongoing chapters in the poem of our lives as well.

There are three reasons implied in 1 Timothy 2 as to why He does this. One, He does this to create in us a thankful heart (2.12). It is only those who have been rescued from death who are eternally grateful and feel the depths of their unworthiness.

Two, to set us as prime examples of “his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life” (2.15-16-NLT). After all, the story goes, if the Lord could save and change me, he can do the same for you. Or anyone.

And three, really the prime reason, to bring glory and honor to His Name (2.17). God pens some classics. In fact, every one of His stories is a classic. And every classic story is unique and original.

So whatever plot we find ourselves embroiled in, we need to keep in our sights that God loves to write final chapters. Perhaps it is time that we turn the page.
